Abstract
This study focuses on the critical communication gap between urban planning authorities and local residents in Uyo, a city experiencing rapid urbanisation. The study is anchored on Participatory Communication theory, which emphasises dialogue and community involvement in development initiatives. A mixed-methods approach was adopted, which comprised surveys administered to 300 residents in areas undergoing development and in-depth interviews conducted with 15 urban planners and government officials. Findings reveal a predominant top-down communication model, leading to low community awareness, misinformation, and project resistance. Residents expressed a strong desire for consultative forums and transparent information flow. The study concludes that transitioning from a directive to a participatory communication strategy is imperative. It recommends the institutionalisation of regular stakeholder dialogues and the use of local media to co-create sustainable urban plans, thereby ensuring long-term project success and community ownership in Uyo.
